When Horror Movies Are 'Based On A True Story' by GingaAkam When Horror Movies Are 'Based On A True Story' by GingaAkam
Seriously; I don't find horror movies that are based on a true story very respectful to the victims of whatever horror related happened; unless it's loosely based.

If my family and or friends got eaten by bears or some crap like that, I wouldn't want some hollywood bastard making a film about it.

I've been watching horror movies a lot recently. Some of them were based on a true story; three people got stuck in a swamp, two got eaten by a large alligator and the other nearly died; a group of friends got trapped in a sauna, can't remember how many of them died; series of murders, etc.

It's a cryin' shame. Especially when they change the identities, names, personalities, and even genders of the victims. I know Patch Adams was not a horror movie, but it was still based on a true story. There was a male friend of Patch, but in the movie, it was changed to a female for romance. If there are horror movies where this is done, it's sad. They're not paying tribute to the dead person, they're not telling the "brave, inspiring story of a poor innocent victim", they're just making their wallets get fatter.

It's not cool to profit off of someone else's misfortune. The Amnityville Horror series was inspired by true events (inspired meaning it served as the source of inspiration, but it's not what really happened), but it's still not cool that people went through hell in that place. However, a documentary of events is a different story since it can serve non-entertainment purposes.

I feel like it's more of an awareness thing. Like "WOULD YOU GUYS SHUT THE F_CK UP WITH YOUR STUPID FIRST-WORLD PROBLEMS?! LOOK AT THESE POOR PEOPLE! THEY HAVE IT -WAY- WORSE THAN YOU!"

If I become a filmmaker, that's probably why I'll do it. With a little bit of this reason.

Yeah, it's movies like those that make me want to hop in a car and drive over to Hollywood, cause some devasting stuff to them, and see if they will make a movie outta that.
If they did, then I'm moving to Canada.

It's just taking advantage of other peoples pain... "Oh look, these people suffered a lot! I bet if I put it in a movie I could get lots of money!"
What happened to the beautiful existence of respect?

Not just horror movie either, but those drama films and other merchandising off of things like the 9/11 attacks and pretty much ever destructive event in memory.

Well, it's based on a true story... except it wasn't a house... there were only two people involved... it wasn't paranormal and... the only serious injury was a broken leg... that what it means to be based on true story unless there is sufficient background evidence that is shown in the movie which there usually isn't.

My friends think a 'Based on a True Story.' kind of movie is better than one made up totally.

I don't want to see a man get their skull crushed by a car and then happily talk about the movie afterward. It makes me feel bad, and sometimes even sick.

Well, I kinda thought that you like silent hill. My parents bought almost every silent hill game xD, i still need to play them.. People say they can have shitty controls and stuff.. I need to watch the movies too though.
Hm.. I didn't heard of the last two yet.. Do you know.. Mirrors or human centipede? Brrr.... The second one is so....gross...

Silent hill and Silent hill 4's controls annoy me XD but they're great games; after a little bit of gameplay you get used to it

Mirrors sound familiar; I know Human centipede but I don't want to watch it because as you said it's pretty gross. I can handle gore and stuff, but that one is just kind of. . . yeah.

I've played all of the main ones besides 4 and Downpour. Although I haven't finished Origins yet, or Shattered memories because of a memory mistake thingy. I was lucky enough to find the arcade game and play it :3

For plot lines that connect, Silent hill mostly connects with Silent hill 3, but mostly the plots don't connect in ways that would confuse you if you didn't play the previous game

I'm sooooo with you there. My dad bought it and we watched it, if I were strong enough to punch the TV screen in I would've. Instead I just threw the case at it and ranted to my dad 'bout how he shouldn't have bought it.

XD, agreed. I first watched it in th theater, and I was like, No. And now we're supposed to be comparing the book to the movie in english class, which means we have to watch it again. And most of the kids who like the movie better probably hate books, or they never read the book. Because the book was sooo much better. Also, did you know that today is National Boob Day?

yeah i can agree with you on that
lol eaten by bears, what a funny idea..like if the movie is good, and it's based on a true story

(like the blair witch project, was good and scary as shit when i was 13)
and it's based off of a true story (to my knowledge on the Bell Witch Haunting, crazy story about the Bell Family in 1817)

i mean, that's alright, plus Hollywood over reacts about everything, and the movie's false in multiple ways
blah, i just watch movies that seem awesome to me!

"horror" movies with an actor filming as if you were her camera

i dunno looked cool to me

From what I know, those that are "based on a true story" have the littlest connection to an actual event. Sometimes, yes, it's pretty accurately based, but that's few and far between mostly. Thogh I throughly agree with you- I wouldn't want Hollywood project my tragedies everywhere like that. It's just plain cruel to do.

While some 'based on true story' films can be respectful/ be for the purpose of commemorating or memorializing a person/event, horror 'true story' films are usually still about the gore/ shock value so they unfortunately tend to be . . .less respectful and more exploitative. There always seems to be someone willing to try and make money off of anything they can get their hands on . . .
