~ Current time ~

Memories, they seem easy to hold on to, yet in reality, are fragile. Like delicate glass or china, memories are precious; yet, even something small could shatter them all. They are precious treasures that one keeps to oneself; although some may be burdens, others are beautiful moments that will always be in memory, long after the moment has passed.

And yet still, they seem like they would be forever, even though once they are gone, they seem like they were never even there.

* * *

The sun slowly went down the sky and hid behind the horizon, taking its light with it. Soon there was darkness, but the darkness was pierced by the shining light of the moon and the many stars surrounding it.

Night; it was a good time of day, a time for sleep, a time for peace, a time for silence, a time for ‘games.’

Kagekao sat atop a building’s roof and peered down at the city. People left the streets and reentered their homes, some had happy families; husband, wife, children, maybe even grandparents. Others were broken families, maybe a single mother, or a widower, but still; they were families.

However, of course, there were the lonely people. Single people who didn’t really have a family to live with, but they still had a chance to make one; and probably had parents who still cared for them.

“Lucky bastards.” Kage hissed under his breath.

Sure, he still had a chance to have a family of his own if he ever desired one. He was much better off than how he was in his first memory; lots of friends, enjoyable ‘job’, love. But still, even with the present being as joyful as it was, that didn’t mean that the past didn’t happen and was something to be forgotten.

Even with silence, meditation, and concentration; Kage couldn’t dig up any old memories. The furthest he could remember was when he woke up in that room; wrapped in a blanket, bloody bandages around his head, horrible headache, this mask lying next to him, and all alone.

But here, looking up at the night sky, it was nice. Kage could remember other nights, just like this, spent in Japan; moon out and bright, stars numerous and beautiful, and Kage all alone.

Of course, things had gotten a lot better when he met Kai. That was a lot of fun, finally having a companion. Kage could remember those days when he was barely a teenager and living by himself in the city; then, a few years after he had woken with no memories, finally finding another demon to call friend.

Remembering those days, it made Kage wonder about Scollex. Of course, he had not seen Scollex since a few days before he and Kai had left to America. But it made him wonder how he was doing, hoping that maybe there was another demon or shinigami to take him down a peg or two.

That damn shinigami, Kage had had many fights with him; some won, some lost, but he had always managed to escape before death. In some ways it had been fun, but in most ways it had been horribly painful; both physically and mentally. He had never gotten Scollex to reveal if he had killed Kage’s parents or not. Who knew, maybe Scollex was lying about all of it; maybe Kage didn’t have parents. Maybe he was some creation experiment gone wrong and left to die by himself, or some other equally preposterous event; one’s mind tended to wander to insane proportions when left with hardly anything to work with.

Kage sat and gazed at the night sky, alone with his thoughts.

* * *

After a while of silence, Kage couldn’t quite tell how long, there was a noise behind him; the light sound of something scraping against the cement of the roof, as if someone landed on it from climbing or a jump. After this noise, there was the sound of footsteps approaching Kage.

“誰ですか? カイ?” (Who is it? Kai?) Kage asked, without turning his head.

“いや” (No)

Kage turned his head to see who had joined him atop the roof. It was a boy, maybe age seventeen or eighteen, in a black and red hoodie. Upon his face was a Japanese wolf styled mask, black with red and gold designs.

“あ、ライアン、まだ日本語のれんしゅうですか?” (Ah, Ryan, still practicing Japanese?)

“Yeah,” Ryan walked over to Kage and sat down next to him. “Although Kai’s not much help; ‘cause you know, he’s mute and all. I’m better at listening and understanding Japanese than speaking it.”

“そう、何でここにいる?” (So, why are you here?)

“Well, it’s nothing you know, ‘business’ related.”

“そう、続けて、” (So, go on,)

“I asked Kai where you went and he said to the city, I came looking for you. I’ve also noticed that you’ve been acting odd lately. Want to talk about it?”

Kage sighed and thought for a moment.

“Well, it’s mostly about my past, parents and things like that. The problem is, there’s not really anything to talk about.”

“What?”

“That’s the problem, I can’t remember anything. I don’t remember my parents at all, or what happened to them. So I can’t really talk about it.”

“Well,” Ryan sighed, “Sometimes I wish I could forget what happened to my parents.”

Ryan looked up at the sky and remembered that awful scene that had played out in front of him; his mother thinking that he was dead, and that it was partially her fault, and then shooting herself.

“Maybe,” Ryan tried to clear the images from his mind, “Maybe it’s for the best?”

“Maybe . . .” Kage paused, “But I still want to know.”

They sat in silence for a while, just looking at the stars up above, and the many lights and cars down below.

“I’ve decided what I’m going to do.” Kage broke the silence.

“What?”

“I’m leaving, back to Japan.”

“W-what!?” Ryan looked at his friend, shocked, and a little frightened. “Forever!?”

“No, not forever.”

Ryan sighed and calmed himself down.

“Well . . . when are we leaving?” Ryan asked.

“No, not ‘we’, only me. I’d rather face this on my own.”

Ryan was silent.

“I want to leave as soon as possible, and get there as fast as possible.”

“How long will you be gone?”

“Not too long, I promise I’ll be gone no longer than a month.” Kage paused to think, “Hopefully I’ll be able to sneak onto a plane tomorrow or the day after.”

“When are you going to tell everyone?”

“I don’t think I’ll do it myself. If I tell Kai he’ll either beg me not to go or beg me to let him come with. I don’t want to go through that, I just want to leave without any drama.”

“But, you won’t just disappear and let everyone think you died or something, right?”

“Of course not.” Kage looked away, towards where they lived. “Would you mind telling everyone? I mean, after I leave?”

“Sure Kage, I’ll do that.”

Kage stood up and looked out at the city. He looked towards the airport, a little ways away.

“I think I’ll head out soon.” Kage turned towards Ryan, who stood up next to him. “This is the last time you’ll see me for a while.”

“Are you sure everything will be alright?” Ryan asked, his voice wavering a bit.

“It will be, don’t worry. You and Kai do well for yourselves; you can go on without me around all the time; and if you can’t, you can stay with someone else, like Zippers, he’s fun.” Kage chuckled.

“No, I mean with you. You’ll be alright by yourself in Japan, right?”

“Of course I will, I survived on my own when I was barely an adult, I can do it now.” Kage looked around to figure out which rooftop to jump to next. He spotted where he wanted to land, and prepared to jump over. He was to go to the airport, sneak onto an airline headed towards Japan, and then go back to Japan; to unlock memories.

Before he jumped, he turned to look at Ryan.

“さようなら ライアン.” (Goodbye Ryan.)

“さようなら カゲカオ、頑張って.” (Goodbye, Kagekao, good luck.)

Part 1 Epilogue - [link]

NOTE: The chapters for part 2 will not start from 17, but be at 1. Unless that's a bad idea. I dunno.

But, yay! Part 2 start! -fires gun- Annnd they're off!

And this is much longer than I expected it to be.

Yes, I had to specify that it's current time, not still in the past. Ya know, just 'cause. I know if I didn't, some people would think that Ryan went back in time or something.

Also, it has come to my attention that some people think Kai is a human. Well people, humans don't normally have cat-esque claws.

And new preview image, 'cause new part. Wouldn't be fitting to have young Kage up there.

Japanese - 頑張って is 'Ganbate', for 'good luck', but can also be used like 'hang in there' or something I guess; you know, synonyms.

Characters, Story (C) :icongingaakam:

Also, what do you guys think? Will Kage find his parents? Dead or alive? Or what happened to them? Or about Scollex? I want to hear theories, place your bets now XD

Another masterpiece, i might say, Ginga. Your stories have always been nice to read, and it always makes people anticipate the next chapter. The way you simply state small ideas at the end and put hints all over the story really puts your readers on the edge of their seats, like what you did for this chapter. The feelings here are not too intense today, but it is still very interesting. A little bit more details on the feelings and thoughts may make it better and more sensual, well, that is unless you are going to turn it into a cliff hanger, then by all means, go for it. I don't really need to touch on the originality as your stories are already as original as it can get, so keep it up. Overall fantastic stories, great plots, many feels, nice action, heart thumping cliff hangers. A little more details on the passive sides of the story (thoughts) and BOOMSHAKALACA your readers will be hooked. KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB GINGA!! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>
